Great analysis, though I think you only took a snapshot in time and used that to make a specific argument. GE and Delta are two different businesses with different histories and contexts that lead to them being the Companies that they are. It’s only from an appreciation of their unique stories where one can seat and analyze the merits(or none thereoff) of each company’s strategy. I look forward to reading more of your analysis of Delta considering they expansion strategy outside of Zim through the sorghum beer brands which is worth watching in the long term and their missteps with their mahewu brand where brand value was destroyed as a result of a strategy being forced upon delta by Coca-Cola (a perfect example of African companies not having confidence in their own competencies and understanding of their local markets).

Thanks for the comment. Very fair comment. It was based on snap shot in time.

Interesting GE has now broken up the conglomerate and the stock price performance has improved significantly.

As Warren would put it “ the stock market is meant to serve us rather than inform us “ 😂. So let’s wait and see if all these will prove worthwhile in the long term. Do consider my point though Delta’s approach on Mahewu is worth an article. Mahewu is a local product/brand that we associate with our grandmothers. It’s local to many African countries. To then take that local native brand and give it a foreign name at the insistence of the Coca Cola company ( which is trying to develop a consistent brand across Africa) appears to me to be a marketing misstep. I wonder if in this case Coca-Cola should have allowed the locals to take the lead. Delta’s sept 23 result showed a decline in mahewu sales which confirms my suspicions. I also wonder if there is a theme worth discussing on Corporate Africa’s perception that foreign is always better which is not always true? Food for thought for your next article.

Delta is on my watchlist thanks for the suggestion. Will do my research on that.

Also really appreciate the thoughtful comments and engagement. I really value it since I am also trying to validate my assumptions and check any bias I have.

When people bring feedback even when it is to disagree it is always very helpful.

Going to Delta’s analyst briefing today, would be interested to see how the story continues. Great work.
